Best Artificial Intelligence for Each Use: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity Compared to October 2026

The Best Artificial Intelligence It doesn't exist at all: in October 2026 the right choice depends on the work to be done, the tools you already use and where your data can end up. To write and read long documents we almost always start with Claude; as a handyman assistant ChatGPT is the most complete. Who spends the day in Gmail and Documents makes more with Gemini, who works in Word and Excel with Copilot, who does research with sources on sight with Perplexity.

Even the title of most powerful AI constantly changes hands: in September alone, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google introduced at least ten new models, and two are not yet open to the public.

Here you find, use for use, a Reasoned Recommendation and the link to the dedicated guide. Plans, models and prices refer to the official pages as of October 3, 2026 and change often: before subscribing check the official page.

In summary

  • There is no better artificial intelligence for everything: they decide the task, the tools you already use and the data processing.
  • To write and read long documents we start with Claude; ChatGPT is the most complete assistant; Gemini and Copilot make more in Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.
  • The most powerful model changes every month, and it's often not the one included in the free plan you're trying.
  • In free and personal plans, content can be used to train models if you don't turn off the option: customer data only goes into business plans.
  • Before paying, try the same three real tasks out of two or three assistants: half an hour of rehearsal is worth more than any ranking.

What is the most powerful artificial intelligence in October 2026?

If you ask the producers, each one indicates its own: OpenAI presents GPT-6 Astra as the world’s smartest model, Anthropic describes Claude Fable 5.1 the most advanced for programming and intellectual work, Google calls Gemini 3.1 Pro its most advanced model in the app (Google AI plans). For daily work everyone recommends a cheaper model.

Producer Tip Model Where to Find It Daily model API price per million tokens, input/output Source
OpenAI GPT-6 Astra ChatGPT Plus (limited) and Pro, API GPT-6.1 Sol, near Astra Astra 10 $ / 50 $; GPT-6.1 Sol 2 $ / 10 $ OpenAI Models
Anthropic Claude Fable 5.1 Claude Max and Team Premium, Pro with separate credits, API Claude Opus 5.5 Fable 10 $ / 50 $; Opus 5.5 4 $ / 20 $ Models Claude
Google Gemini 3.1 Pro, preview Gemini App, API Gemini 3.8 Flash 3.1 Pro $2 / $12 under 200,000 tokens; 3.8 Flash $0.75 / $3.75 until December 31, 2026 Gemini API Pricing
Two September models you can't use them yet Claude Mythos 5.1, the same model as Fable 5.1 with different protections, is reserved for controlled access programs (Anthropic). Gemini 4 Argon, announced on September 30, for now goes to a group of cyber defense experts and will arrive first to paying API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers (Google).

An independent ranking tells a different story. On the Artificial Analysis index, which brings together ten pieces of office work, code and reasoning, on 28 September he was first Claude Opus 5.5 with 58 points, ahead of Claude Sonnet 5.5 with 56 (analysis on Sonnet 5.5); two days later Gemini 4 Argon reached GPT-6 Astra at altitude 53, a point above GPT-6.1 Sol (analysis on Argon).

The same institute also measures the hallucination rate, i.e. how often a model takes a guess instead of admitting that it does not know: Gemini 4 Argon stops at 15%, GPT-6 Astra reaches 51%, Claude Opus 5.5 to 59% (Argon, Sonnet 5.5). The leader of the overall index is not the most cautious, and Anthropic itself writes that at these levels, benchmark margins say less and less about real work (Opus 5.5 announcement).

The most powerful, therefore, is not necessarily the best for you. How to read manufacturers' tables is in because vendor benchmarks are not comparable; to choose a model to connect to a software via API there is best AI model for use case.

September 2026: the models presented in a month
  • 1 September: Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 (Anthropic).
  • September 2: Gemini 3.8 Flash (Google).
  • September 3: GPT-6 Astra (OpenAI).
  • September 22Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic), GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna (OpenAI).
  • 28 SeptemberClaude Sonnet 5.5 (Anthropic).
  • 29 September: GPT-6.1 Sol, update of GPT-6 Sol arrived a week later (OpenAI).
  • 30 September: Gemini 4 Argon, restricted access (Google).

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others: the best AIs in comparison

Among the alternatives to be evaluated there is also Kimi AI. Before choosing a plan, compare the Kimi app prices with the expected work, keeping the cost of API integrations separate.

When you say "the best AI" you almost always mean an app, and inside each app you run different models depending on the plan.

Assistant Without paying Personal Subscription Where it makes more Source
ChatGPT Rollout GPT-6 Luna from October 8; progressive availability and functions with plan limits Go 8 €, Plus 23 €, Pro from 103 € per month Handyman; ChatGPT Work and Codex, extended by Plus plan ChatGPT Rates, GPT-6 rollout
Claude Sonnet and Haiku, web search, file creation Pro 18 € per month (15 € with annual), Max from 90 €, tax excluded Writing, Long Papers, Claude Code Plans Claude
Gemini 3.6 Flash, variable access to 3.1 Pro, images, Deep Research AI Plus €4.99, AI Pro €21.99, Ultra from €99.99 per month Google app; video in paid plans Google AI plans
Microsoft Copilot Basic Chat Microsoft 365 Personal 10 €, Family 13 €, Premium 22 € per month Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook Microsoft 365 plans
Perplexity Searches with sources Pro $20 per month Inline citations, model choice Perplexity Prices
Mistral Vibe Limited Messages and Searches Pro $14.99 per month European company, private installation for businesses Mistral prices

From October 8, OpenAI starts rollout of GPT-6 Luna for ChatGPT Free and Go; the distribution is progressive, so some accounts may still be in transition. The announcement concerns the Chat tab and does not change the Work and Codex models (GPT-6 and Intelligent UI launch). Claude Free offers Sonnet and Haiku, while Opus starts from the Pro. Those who say "Claude is better than ChatGPT" after two free trials often compared models of different bands.

Perplexity, on the other hand, lets you choose models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and other providers on its Pro plan (models included in Perplexity). One-on-one comparisons are in ChatGPT vs Claude, ChatGPT vs Gemini and Claude vs Gemini. To choose between OpenAI and Google subscriptions, plan by plan, there is ChatGPT vs Gemini paid.

The best artificial intelligences to write, search and read documents

To write: Claude, with ChatGPT for variants

For reports, articles and rewrites that must maintain a precise tone, Claude is the starting point. Anthropic states that Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 write more clearly than the previous generation (Sonnet 5.5), and Sonnet 5.5 is also used on Claude.ai without a subscription (Sonnet). ChatGPT remains convenient for so many fast variants, such as titles and posts, or for a text that comes out along with an image.

For emails it counts more where you work: Gemini is inside Gmail with Google AI Plus and Pro, Copilot inside Outlook and Word with Microsoft 365. Proof of Italian and limits are in Best AI for Writing, the comparison between models in best AI models for writing.

For research: Perplexity for answers, Deep Research for reports

For a quick question with sources alongside the answer, Perplexity remains the most direct tool, with inline citations in every response (Perplexity Pro). For a report that crosses many sources you need the in-depth search functions: Deep Research there is also free in ChatGPT, in limited form, and in Gemini; in Claude the Research starts from the Pro plan (Claude Plans).

A cited source is not a read source: open the links on which a decision is based. The comparison is in Best AI to do research and in ChatGPT vs Perplexity.

For long documents and PDFs: Claude, or Gemini when files are huge

Contracts, balance sheets, specifications: here counts how much text the assistant holds in front at once and how much remains precise on the details. Claude comes up to a million context tokens, depending on the model (Claude Plans); Google AI Pro accepts files up to 1,500 pages (Google AI plans); in ChatGPT Plus the reasoning works on about 320 incoming pages, about 680 with Pro (ChatGPT rates).

OpenAI writes that GPT-6.1 Sol exceeds Opus 5.5 on GDP.pdf, a test on professional PDFs with tables and graphs, at less than half the cost per task, in the tested settings (announcement). On a contract the summary remains a first reading: the mentioned steps should be checked. If the same documents come back every week a system that you only look for in your files (RAG: what is it). The rest is in best AI for documents and best AI to summarize PDF.

Best AIs for Programming, Working in Excel, and Preparing Slides

To program: an agent working on the repository

Today you choose from agents who read the project, launch the tests and propose the changes. Claude Code is included in all paid plans of Claude (Claude Plans); OpenAI Codex uses GPT-6.1 Sol from the Plus plan; Google AI Pro includes basic limits for the Antigravity agent (Google AI plans).

In Anthropic’s table, Opus 5.5 is ahead of GPT-6 Astra on Terminal-Bench 4.0 (Anthropic), while OpenAI writes that GPT-6.1 Sol equals Astra on DeepSWE at about a fifth of the cost (OpenAI). Different tests, therefore not comparable: give the agent a real ticket and count how much you have to correct. The comparison is in Best AI for Programming, the details of use in Opus 5.5 in Claude Code and Codex with GPT-6 Sol and Luna.

For Excel and data: the AI inside the sheet you already use

If data lives in Excel the most practical choice is Copilot, which with Microsoft 365 Personal, €10 per month, works in Excel, Word and PowerPoint (Microsoft 365 plans). ChatGPT has extensions for Excel and Google Sheets, limited in the free plan (ChatGPT rates); Claude for Microsoft 365 comes with the Pro plan.

To analyze an exported file work well ChatGPT and Claude, which execute code on the file and return tables and graphs, in Claude also free (Claude Plans). Check a sample formula before trusting a total, and keep salaries and invoices out of personal accounts. More details in Best AI for Excel and best AI for data analysis.

For presentations: the structure at AI, the numbers at you

If your company presents in PowerPoint, Copilot works inside the file you then project. At DevDay on 29 September, OpenAI announced collaborative slides in ChatGPT, arriving in the following weeks for Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, with exports to PowerPoint and Google Slides (DevDay 2026); Claude creates slides from the Pro plan (Claude Plans).

AI quickly prepares an ordered draft; history and numbers remain yours, because a wrong slide in front of a customer costs more than the time saved. The specialized tools are in best AI for presentations, the prompts in AI prompt for presentations.

The best AIs for images and videos

Images: first license, then style

Quality is high almost everywhere; conditions of use count for a company. Midjourney makes images public by default, Adobe declares Firefly models trained on licensed content, Ideogram points to the text inside the image. The Gemini image generation and editing app is also included for free, convenient for drafts (Google AI plans).

The AI Act asks those who publish a deepfake to declare it from August 2, 2026, and suppliers to mark the content generated legibly by a machine, with time until December 2, 2026 for systems already on the market (Article 50 of EU Regulation 2024/1689, EU Regulation 2026/1744). Licences and turnover thresholds, instrument by instrument, are in best AI for images.

Video: Sora is gone, Gemini is gone

If a tutorial advises you Sora is passed: OpenAI closed app and site on April 26, 2026 and API on September 24 (OpenAI Notice). For short clips from an idea or photo the easiest way is the Gemini app, with the generation of videos in the Google AI Plus and Pro plans and the Gemini Omni Flash in Flow model (Google AI plans).

For a digital presenter, or to translate a video already shot with your voice, you need tools such as Synthesia and HeyGen; for scenes to be generated or shots to be edited, Runway and Kling. Face and voice of a person are used only with his consent. The detail is in Best AI for Video.

The best free AI, the one for the company and the one that keeps data in Europe

Free: ChatGPT and Gemini as handyman, Claude for lyrics

ChatGPT Free enters the rollout of GPT-6 Luna from October 8, with progressive availability and plan limits (OpenAI announcement); Gemini offers 3.6 Flash, variable access to 3.1 Pro, images and Deep Research; Claude Free includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search and file creation (ChatGPT rates, Google AI plans, Claude Plans).

The hidden price lies in the settings: in the personal plans of ChatGPT, Claude and Mistral the contents can serve to train the models until you deactivate the option (ChatGPT rates, Claude Plans, Mistral prices), and ChatGPT's Go plan can show advertisements. The full comparison is in best AI for free and in Free ChatGPT vs Plus.

The free plan is enough if

  • use AI a few times a week for texts and questions
  • not upload customer documents or personal data
  • a mid-range model already does your homework well

It is better to pay if

  • work every day on long documents or code
  • you need Claude Code, Codex or top models
  • you want to connect the assistant to mail, Drive or management software: there you need a business plan

In the company: decide the suite you already have

For a team the first question is where you work. With Microsoft 365 Copilot is already in the apps; for work accounts Google proposes Gemini Enterprise (Google AI plans). Without a reference suite, the most direct alternatives are ChatGPT Business, from $20 per user per month with annual billing, with prices varying by country (ChatGPT Business Billing), and Claude Team, from €18 per seat per month with the annual, excluding taxes (Claude Plans): In both, by default, business content is not for training.

A subscription covers individual work. When the task touches your systems, such as sorting mail or compiling management software, you need a AI Agent or a process automation linked to data. The criteria are in which AI to choose for the company and in best AI models for companies.

Privacy and data in Europe: contract, residence, models in the home

If personal data of customers or employees ends in the prompts, the provider processes it on your behalf and the GDPR requests a contract that binds it (Art. 28 of EU Regulation 2016/679). Normally these agreements accompany business plans: check that there is before loading data.

On data residency the differences are concrete. In ChatGPT the European region is provided for in the Enterprise plan, not in Business (ChatGPT rates); via API GPT-6.1 Sol supports residency in EU (model card); the free level of Gemini APIs uses content to improve Google products, the paid one does not (Gemini API Pricing).

Who wants to stay in Europe has Mistral, a European company whose assistant today is called Vibe (first Le Chat), with an Enterprise plan installed on your servers or in your private cloud (Mistral Vibe, prices); the most rigorous alternative is a Local AI model. If you then put an assistant in front of customers, Article 50 of the AI Act asks that they know to talk to an AI. The full picture is in AI and corporate privacy.

Two examples: a technical study on Microsoft 365, an online store on Google

Take a technical study with six people that lives between Word, Excel and Outlook. Copilot enters the apps they already use, for relationships and metric computations; the surveyor who writes long relationships adds Claude Pro, where tone counts. The ChatGPT Plus taken to try you can cancel.

Think about an online cosmetics store on Google Workspace, with a few hundred products. Gemini in Gmail and Documents covers answers to suppliers and product cards; for set photos the commercial license counts first. Questions about shipments and returns do not ask for an extra subscription but for an automation that reads the mail, checks the order and prepares the answer, as in the demo of AI customer care for SMEs.

How to Find Your Best AI in Half an Hour of Trials

The rankings serve to make a short list; they decide your tests.

  1. Choose three real tasks. One writing, one on a document, one on data or code.
  2. Remove sensitive data. Names, amounts, and customer references remain outside of free plans.
  3. Use the same prompt on two or three assistants. Same instructions and same files; some tricks are in prompts that work on multiple models.
  4. He judges as a collaborator. Errors of fact, quality of Italian, time to correct.
  5. It only pays one subscription for a month. Then try again and cancel if it didn't save you time. The extended method is in how to choose an AI model.

Mistakes that charge the wrong subscription

  • Choose from the ranking. The first of the general index is not the first on your tasks, and each manufacturer is measured by tests chosen by him.
  • Judging an app from the free plan. In the free version you spin on a different-range model than the news.
  • Put customer data in a personal account. Without contract on treatment and with active training is a risk you don't need.
  • Trusting a citation without opening it. The hallucinations more insidious have a real source next to it.
  • Keep three subscriptions that do the same things. Almost always two are enough: that of the suite and one to write or program.

The October 6 and 7 announcements add options to consider: Haiku 5.5 for repetitive activities, Mistral Large 4 in API preview, Intelligent UI in ChatGPT for interactive responses and Google Playground for games, with initial USA 18+ access. The AI Review of October 2–8 distinguishes access status and first useful proof: the novelties expand the choice, without establishing a winner for each job.

Every month a new model comes out: what remains valid

The best artificial intelligence, for you, is the one that does your most frequent tasks well, is in the tools you use and treats the data as needed. The model names will change again; the test method will not.

If the evidence shows that the job to be fixed is not in a chat room but in emails, documents or management software, the AI consulting by Giallo Studio starts from those processes and indicates which model is needed at each step, before talking about subscriptions.

FAQ

What is the best artificial intelligence?

No single AI is best at everything. In October 2026, Claude is the starting point for writing and reading long documents, ChatGPT the most complete assistant, Gemini and Copilot perform better within Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, and Perplexity excels at research with sources. Try two or three assistants on the same real tasks before paying.

What is the most powerful artificial intelligence?

Each manufacturer points to its flagship model: GPT-6 Astra for OpenAI, Claude Fable 5.1 for Anthropic, Gemini 3.1 Pro among the Google models available in the app. On the independent index of Artificial Analysis, at the end of September 2026, the first place was by Claude Opus 5.5. The most powerful changes from week to week and is often not included in the plan you use.

What is the best free AI?

For all-purpose use, ChatGPT Free and Gemini, which also include limited image generation and deep research. For writing and working on text, Claude Free with the Sonnet and Haiku models. On free and personal plans, content may be used to train models until you disable the option, so do not enter customer data.

Which is better: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

It depends on the work. ChatGPT has the largest ecosystem, with images, ChatGPT Work and Codex; Claude performs better on long texts, documents and programming with Claude Code; Gemini suits those working in Gmail, Docs and other Google apps. Many professionals use two, chosen for different tasks.

Which AI to use in the company without privacy risks?

A business plan rather than a personal account: in ChatGPT Business and Claude Team, company content is not used for training by default. You also need a data processing agreement with the provider. For more sensitive data, consider European data residency or a model installed on your own servers.

Are the rankings of the best AI reliable?

They are an indication, not a decision. Providers publish tests they select using different settings, and even independent indices measure different capabilities: the model topping the general index is not the one that invents the fewest answers. What matters is how it performs on your tasks, tested with your files.

Is it better to pay for more AI subscriptions?

Almost never more than two. The assistant included in the suite you already use, Copilot or Gemini, plus one chosen for your main work, such as Claude for writing or an agent for programming, is usually enough. A third subscription doing the same things is an expense with no return.
