AI for driving schools: enrolment, lessons and exam reminders

AI for driving schools: learner permit deadlines, eight hours of mandatory driving lessons, official quizzes and licence point recovery. Assistant limits.

Reading time: 12 min

AI scheme for autoschools: the AI assistant of the driving school linked to enrollments, guides, exams and WhatsApp

The AI for autoschools makes more in two points: the messages that pupils and parents send at every hour and the control of the deadlines that the law sets for each practice. The theory must be overcome within six months of the question, with at most two attempts, and the pink sheet is worth twelve months (Art. 122 of the Highway Code). An assistant connected to the management software reads these dates, alerts the secretariat on time and answers repetitive questions; exams and hours certification remain at the school.

These are two different tasks. Calculating when a learner’s permit expires is a formula, and a well-written formula makes fewer mistakes than a language model. AI is useful where language is involved: understanding a hastily written message (“can I do the night-driving session on Thursday?”), explaining to an eighteen-year-old why they answered a right-of-way quiz question incorrectly, or rewriting a list of deadlines as a notice the business owner can read in a minute. It also needs to be given the new rules: the Ministerial Decree 294 of 2025 set in eight mandatory driving hours in school for license B.

In summary

  • Each student's deadlines set them Articles 121 and 122 of the Highway Code: calculating them is a rule work, the AI is responsible for writing them as clear warnings.
  • The compulsory guides for the B licence are eight hours in four modules: an assistant can propose the lessons respecting the order of the modules and the daily limit.
  • On ministerial quizzes the AI explains the errors of the exam card only if it works on the official list and an instructor reviews the explanations.
  • The medical certificate contains health data: the school chatbot lists the documents to be carried, does not collect them in chat.
  • For recovery courses points the assistant filters the requests and passes the review cases to the secretariat.
  • Reservation of exams and certification of hours remain at the secretariat, with the credentials of the school.

Each student's law calendar, from application to practical examination

Each B-licence practice carries with it a series of dates that depend on each other. It sets the Highway Code for Articles 121 and 122, and the page on the examination tests of the Motorist portal It summarizes its application.

Pass What the Rule Says Where it's written What Automation Can Do
From Question to Theory Proof passed within six months of application, no more than two attempts Art. 122, paragraph 1 Report who is approaching six months without an exam date
Examination of theory 30 quizzes in 20 minutes, passed with no more than 3 errors Motorist portal Simulations in the same format, errors grouped by topic
Pink Sheet Validity of twelve months Art. 122, paragraph 6 Warn in advance who has hours or exams left to do
First practical test Not earlier than one month after the release of the pink sheet Art. 121, paragraph 8 Don't propose exam dates too close to release
After a bad test At least one month before trying again Art. 121, paragraph 10 Calculate the first useful date for the new attempt
Booking To be forwarded no later than the fifth day before the test Art. 121, paragraph 11 Remember the booking window at the secretariat
Driving Attempts Up to three practical tests within the validity of the pink sheet Motorist portal Show the instructor how many attempts remain

None of these rows requires artificial intelligence: the management software checks them with a formula starting from three dates (application, learner’s permit issue, result of the last test). AI works on the result: a morning list of students to call for the administrative staff, and a message for the student saying what is missing and which days are available.

Attention to the starting point of each term: the six months for the theory run from the question, the twelve months from the release of the pink sheet. A calculation that confuses the two dates misses the notices of all the students, and no one notices until someone shows up with the pink sheet expired.

Eight hours in four modules: how to set up mandatory guides

After the reform, the aspirant to license B can practice with a private companion only after having done in the car school the guides on the highway or on extra-urban roads and night roads, and must have with him the certification of the school (Art. 122, paragraph 5-bis). The decree of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of 17 November 2025 set the route: eight hours with a qualified instructor, in four modules to be followed with a precise order.

  1. Form A, two hours. Safe use of the vehicle, driver assistance devices, simulation of a fault with triangle and jacket. It comes first of all the others.
  2. Form B, three hours. Urban roads: intersections, roundabouts, pedestrians and cyclists, uphill departure, parking.
  3. Form C, two hours. Motorway or suburban roads, only after at least an hour of module B.
  4. Form D, one hour. Night guide, in the time window defined by Article 2 of Decree 294/2025.

The decree adds rules that affect scheduling. Each lesson may last no more than two hours per day; parts of modules B, C and D can be combined on the same day if each lasts at least thirty minutes. Night driving counts from 20:00, or from half an hour after sunset when darkness falls earlier, until 6:45 or half an hour before sunrise (Art. 2 and 3 of the Decree). In winter the module D is then done in the late afternoon, in summer only in the evening.

The hours are certified on the DMV platform: a partial certificate after modules A and B, the final one after C and D, both acquired in the National Registry of driving skills. If the pink sheet expires without a license, the certified exercises remain valid eighteen months for a second application, as long as you have a theory exam still valid.

With three instructors, two dual-control cars and about thirty students driving, to give an example, the interlocking changes every day. An assistant connected to the calendar proposes the next lesson already compliant: no module C without an hour of B, no third hour in the same day, nights for the night calculated on sunset. The link between agenda and messages works as in automatic appointments; certification instead passes from the ministerial platform with the credentials of the school, which should not be entrusted to external tools.

Ministerial quizzes and exam sheet: AI alongside those who study theory

From 20 December 2021 the theory exam for the A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE licenses is 30 quizzes in 20 minutes, passed with no more than 3 incorrect answers; before that they were 40 quizzes in 30 minutes, with 4 errors allowed. The same Motorist portal publishes official quizzes for AM, B, superior and CQC licenses.

The most useful material for an assistant comes after an examination gone wrong. From the day after the test the candidate can ask on the Portal the theory exam card, which comes in PDF and remains downloadable for seven days. There are the wrong quizzes: the assistant groups them by topic (precedences, danger signals, safety distance) and builds the exercises of the following weeks on the official questions of those topics.

The risk is the wrong explanation said with certainty: a generic model knows the Highway Code in an approximate way. Two stakes make it reliable: the assistant answers only on the basis of official quizzes and the manual adopted by the school, with the technique called RAG, and an instructor once rereads the explanations of the wrong quizzes more often, which are then reused. For models to produce plausible but false answers explains the guide on hallucinations of AI.

For candidates with DSA, specific provisions apply, recalled by the the Exam Tests Portal page: those questions go to the answering machine, not the assistant.

What the driving school chatbot can answer at nine o'clock in the evening

The evening questions are almost always the same: how much does the license package B cost, when the next theory course starts, what documents are needed, if a parent can accompany their child to practice. An assistant on site and WhatsApp responds with the school data and switches to one person everything else; as you set it, even in multiple languages for foreign students, the demo of the WhatsApp chatbots for businesses. On the last question the answer has changed with the reform: a chatbot written two years ago would be wrong, and that is why the answers are read again at every change of norm.

Medical certificate does not pass from chat A medical certificate must be attached to the licence application which, according to the Motorist portal, is valid quarterly if issued by a monocratic doctor and biannually if issued by a local medical commission. It contains health data, a particular category for the Article 9 of the GDPR: the chatbot tells what to bring and where, the collection takes place on the premises.

From August 2, 2026, then, the Article 50 of the AI Act asks that those who dialogue with an AI system be informed of it, unless it is evident from the context. Just one line at the beginning of the conversation: you are writing with the automatic assistant, to talk to the voicemail write «operator». The other obligations for a small business are in the guide on AI Act for SMEs. The reminders that the school sends first on WhatsApp, out of an open conversation, instead start from message models to be approved: the guide on WhatsApp Business template.

Points recovery: sorting urgent requests without promising anything

Those looking for a points recovery course usually write in haste. The rules are in the Article 126-bis of the Highway Code: the refresher courses organized by the autoschools repurchase six points, nine for those who have a certificate of professional qualification together with the license B, C, C+E, D or D+E. The points return to the outcome of an exam, and the certificate must be sent to the Motorization office to update the registry of the qualified.

The course serves only if the score is not exhausted: with points to zero the law provides for the revision of the license, that is, a new fitness exam (paragraph 6). The assistant then asks what license you have, how many points you have left and when you need the course. The balance is verified by the person with the service «Legal points balance» of the Motorist Portal, not the assistant from the story. With zero points or an ongoing review the request passes to the secretariat; otherwise the assistant proposes the first date of the course, without promising that the points will return with the frequency only.

Two secretarial situations, with dates in hand

Two examples built on the rules seen above.

The pink sheet that expires with the night still to be done

Think of a pupil who has seven weeks of pink paper left. He did module A and two hours of module B; he's one hour away from B, two hours away from C, and night time. With the limit of two hours a day you need at least two outings, basically more. Then there is the calculation that is usually done too late: between one test gone wrong and the next must pass at least a month (Art. 121, paragraph 10). To retain a second try, the first exam should be fixed in the first two and a half weeks or so, with the reservation forwarded at least five days before. The assistant puts this information in the morning notice and proposes to the student free evenings.

The wrong theory on the first try

A girl presents the question and at the first theory exam she misses five quizzes, two over the limit. The next day he asks for the exam card on the Portal and turns it around at the school. The assistant groups up the errors, three on the pre-crossings and two on the safe distance, and prepares four weeks of exercises on the official quizzes of those two topics. At the secretariat comes a reminder: the second test no earlier than a month and within six months of the question, because it is the last allowed in that window (Art. 122, paragraph 1). The theory instructor rereads the explanations generated before they reach the pupil.

Where automation in school is wrong, and how to notice it

  • Dates start from the wrong document. If the application date or learner’s permit date is empty or wrong in the business management software, the alert will be too. A monthly sample check costs little.
  • Responses age with norms. A chatbot that describes mandatory driving lessons as they were before the 2025 decree, or still talks about 40 quiz questions, does more harm than having no chatbot.
  • The credentials come out of the school. Motorization portal and drill platform remain in the hands of the secretariat; automation works on an export of data, not with passwords.
  • Messages start at the wrong times. Students are often very young boys and on the other side there is also a parent: few messages, no late-night reminders, always the ability to write to a person.
  • The quiz explanations don't read them again. A mistake repeated to a hundred students weighs more than one said in the courtroom, because no one corrects it.

Where to start with one or two locations

Before choosing a tool, verify that the data to calculate the deadlines are already in the management software.

  • For each student, the business management software has the application submission date and the learner’s permit issue date.
  • Driving hours are recorded per module (A, B, C, D) and not just as a total.
  • The results of the theory and driving tests are marked with the date.
  • Price list, schedule of theory courses and secretarial hours are in an updated document.
  • A voicemail person rereads the chatbot's responses when a rule changes.

If the list is almost all ticked off, start with the morning notice with pink sheets expiring and exam windows: use data you already have and don't talk to students. Then the evening chatbot, last the quiz explanations. How a system that reads the calendar and writes messages is distinguished from a chatbot explains the page on AI agents; for student data there is the guide on GDPR and AI in the company.

A driving school operates around deadlines it does not set and questions repeated every evening: once the former are organised, AI can handle the latter without inventing rules. FAQ

Can AI book driving tests with the Motorizzazione instead of the administrative team?

No, and it is not worth trying. Booking goes through the Motorizzazione’s channels using the driving school’s credentials and must be submitted by the fifth day before the test. The assistant can prepare a list of students who are ready, with the theory test passed, a valid learner’s permit, and certified driving hours, and remind the administrative team of booking windows.

How does the assistant calculate when a student’s learner’s permit expires?

It starts from the issue date recorded in the business management system and applies the twelve-month validity specified by Article 122 of the Italian Highway Code. This is a rules-based calculation, not an intuition from the model: AI is then used to write the notice to the student and answer their questions. If the date in the system is wrong, the notice will be wrong too, so it needs to be checked against the document.

Can AI explain incorrectly answered theory-test questions to students?

Yes, if the assistant works from the official question list and the manual adopted by the school, and if an instructor reviews explanations for the questions students most often get wrong. Without these safeguards, a model can give convincing but outdated explanations, especially for rules changed by the 2024 Highway Code reform. The exam report that the candidate downloads from the Portale dell’automobilista shows which questions to work on.

Can the driving school’s chatbot collect medical certificates on WhatsApp?

Better not. The medical certificate contains health-related data, which the GDPR treats as a special category in Article 9. The chatbot can explain what documents are needed and where to deliver them; collection takes place on the premises or on the channel that your privacy consultant has assessed.

Do the new mandatory driving lessons complicate instructors’ schedules, and can AI help?

It helps suggest lessons in the correct order: module A first, module C only after at least one hour of module B, no more than two hours per day, and night driving within the time window set by the ministerial decree. Certifying the hours remains the driving school’s responsibility on the Motorizzazione platform.

Is an automated enquiry form useful for driving licence points-recovery courses?

Yes, because enquiries arrive urgently and with little information. The form asks for the driving licence category and whether points remain: when the balance is zero, the course is not useful and a licence review is triggered. The course restores six points, or nine for people with a professional qualification, after an exam.
