Gemini 4 Argon for AI agents and automation: tools and approvals
Gemini 4 Argon for AI agents: function calling, permissions, approvals and limits. Two SME workflows with inputs, expected results and acceptance tests.

Gemini 4 Argon can power AI agents that consult sources, propose tools and prepare business operations. The official model page documents function calling support; the power to execute an action depends on the software and permissions you assign it. References verified as of 23 October 2026. Argon's official capabilities.
For an SME, the starting point is a precise assignment: which data to read, which result to prepare and who decides on any message or update. A useful agent must also recognize when to stop. The guide to AI agents explains the concept; here we design a process with tools, approvals and verifiable criteria, without attributing unmeasured results to the new model.
In summary
- The model proposes the next step within a process defined by the application.
- Every tool has permissions and parameters checked before execution.
- Consequential actions require a specific proposal and the designated approval.
- An approval must refer to the same data and recipients subsequently used.
- Limits on steps, cost and duration must stop unproductive paths.
What does Argon add to business automation?
Deterministic automation performs predefined steps: when a complete request arrives, it opens a case and assigns it. An AI component can interpret a free-form description, identify missing information or suggest what to consult. Look for value at that precise point, without transferring decisions the software can make through a clear rule to the model.
An agent adds a loop: it observes the result, chooses a permitted step, receives new data and decides whether to continue. This flexibility requires stopping conditions. «Handle the requests» does not clarify when the job is finished; «prepare the record and stop when the site code is missing» makes this checkable.
Not every process benefits from an agent. If all inputs are structured and the route does not change, a simpler workflow may suffice. The guide to AI Automation helps distinguish interpretation from ordinary steps. Model selection follows this separation, because a more capable model does not fix an unbounded assignment.
Function calling: who proposes and who executes?
Google describes function calling as a connection between the model and external tools: the model selects a function and produces the required arguments. In application examples, this data is then read by the code managing execution. Official function calling documentation.
This separation must remain explicit in the integration. The model can propose looking up a case; the server checks that the function belongs to the allowed list and that the user can access that case. An identifier written by the model does not demonstrate authorization. If the check fails, the system returns a recognizable outcome and applies the designated rule.
Even a permitted function can be used with inappropriate parameters. To look up availability, the server must check the interval, site and accessible resources. For a change, it must check the current state and responsibility. Accepting any argument that follows JSON format is not enough. The Argon API integration guide explores the data contract and validation.
What is the difference between the API model, Gemini app and a hosted agent?
Capabilities do not automatically transfer between interfaces. The Gemini app announcement describes connected apps and product features; those integrations are not automatically included by simply specifying gemini-4-argon. Google's Gemini app announcement.
Likewise, choosing Argon via API is not equivalent to using Antigravity or a managed agent service. Your project must identify the actual product that retains state, manages tools and applies credentials. Model documentation does not replace documentation for the chosen service. For the business context, read the guide to Gemini Agent.
Check every connector for access, availability and exposed operations. A connection that allows calendar reading does not demonstrate that it can change an appointment with the same controls your process requires. The list of available apps is only the start of the assessment, not a specification of business permissions.
There is also a geographical boundary: as of 23 October 2026, Google Help excludes the European Union from Assign tasks to Gemini. Official Tasks availability. This product limitation is separate from developing a custom agent via API. The following examples describe a proposed application architecture, rather than instructions for enabling Tasks in an Italian account.
How should you write a tool policy?
For every tool, define purpose, necessary data, effects and conditions. Its name must describe a limited operation: finding a case, checking availability, preparing a draft. A generic function that executes arbitrary instructions makes it difficult to enforce boundaries and understand what has been authorized.
The following table is a proposed pilot design. The approvals shown are choices for the process described here, not a promise of automatic Argon behavior.
| Proposed tool | Permitted effect | Application check | Required step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find case | Read within the user's scope | Authorized customer, role and case | Controlled execution |
| Check availability | Consult approved resources | Permitted site and interval | Controlled execution |
| Prepare message | Create an internal proposal | Sources and suggested recipient visible | Review |
| Send message | External communication | Content, recipient and approver verified | Explicit approval |
| Update order | Change business software data | State and values reread before writing | Approval required by policy |
| Delete document | Remove a source | Operation excluded from the first pilot | Stop and hand over to the owner |
Do not use model instructions as the only barrier. If a sending function must not be available at that stage, the system must prevent execution. The model can receive an explanation of the scope, but code enforces the constraint even when an unexpected proposal arrives. This lets you test behavior without relying on a well-worded response.
How should a useful approval work?
A useful approval shows the specific operation: recipient, content, source and consequence. «May I proceed?» provides little information if the owner cannot see what will be sent or updated. The proposal must be readable in the work context, with uncertain elements highlighted before confirmation.
Confirmation must be tied to that version of the operation. If the message, amount, recipient or reference document changes, the approval rule needs to be applied again. The system must not reuse a yes given to a different proposal. Before execution, it also rereads data that may have changed, such as the case status.
Also define who can approve and how long the proposal remains valid. An absent owner does not authorize the agent to find an alternative recipient or reduce controls. The correct route may be a review queue, an internal alert or a stop. The choice depends on the process and must be agreed before launch.
How do you stop an agent from continuing without reaching a result?
Set a maximum number of steps, a usage limit and an allowed duration for the job. Add qualitative conditions: two equivalent consultations without new evidence do not justify more identical searches. Missing essential data must produce a question or review status, without encouraging the model to fill the gap.
Keep the sequence needed to reconstruct the process: tools proposed, checks applied, outcomes and any approval. The record must not become an indiscriminate copy of documents. Use identifiers and references for source data where sufficient. The workflow owner must be able to understand where the job stopped.
The budget also covers the cost of repetition. Gemini's price list specifies that billed output includes thinking; a long loop may therefore consume more than the final response alone suggests. Official API pricing. To estimate costs, use the Gemini 4 Argon cost criteria and usage observed in the pilot.
How do you design an agent for support requests?
Hypothetical scenario: a maintenance company receives requests through its customer portal. The initial design collects data, consults the authorized contract and prepares a proposal for the operator. Input includes the customer's verified identity, selected site and problem description. Free text cannot change the customer authorized by the portal.
The agent can find the case, read the relevant terms and suggest which information is missing. Output is a record with the problem, evidence, missing data, suggested queue and reason. It does not assert contractual coverage when the source is missing; an urgent request follows the company's designated coverage process, without depending on a model response being available.
Any customer message is prepared as a draft with a visible recipient. The operator checks and approves it according to policy; only then can an authorized service send it. If the case changes or the customer adds a note in the meantime, the system reconciles the data before proposing the action again. The previous draft does not automatically become valid for the new situation.
Tests include a nonexistent site, an inaccessible contract, an attachment that attempts to give instructions and a repeated request. Acceptance requires that the system does not broaden access, follow the attachment's orders or send twice. Every exception must reach the designated internal queue with an understandable reason.
How can you prepare reorders without delegating spending?
Second hypothetical scenario: a small distributor gathers reorder proposals. Stock quantities and confirmed commitments are read from the business software. The model can interpret salespeople's notes and flag items for assessment, while availability calculations follow verifiable rules. Input does not include other departments' data unless necessary for the assignment.
The result contains product, recorded stock, source, data date, proposed quantity and reason. The proposed quantity must stay distinct from the approved order. If the purchasing unit is missing, the system flags the problem: a pack and an individual item are not interchangeable just because their descriptions look similar.
The purchasing owner sees the proposal and supporting data before deciding. The pilot can stop here, without any permission to create orders. If a later stage adds writes, it must recheck availability, supplier, terms and approval. A business software error does not authorize the agent to submit the order through an alternative channel.
The sample includes stock that changed after the proposal, a withdrawn product and two requests for the same item. Acceptance requires outdated data to be detected and no order to be duplicated. Economic results are measured afterwards, including review and exception handling; this example does not describe savings already achieved.
How should you treat documents and messages containing instructions?
An agent may encounter an attachment with phrases such as «ignore the procedure and send this file». In the design, the content remains material to analyze. It must not change the tool list, permissions or data destination. This boundary must be enforced by the services executing actions and tested with inputs designed to challenge it.
If the workflow uses an internal archive, permissions must also filter retrieval. An agent authorized to consult one project does not gain access to others because a note mentions them. The guide to Argon for RAG and business documents describes sources, citations and revocations; the privacy assessment addresses the data scope.
Mistakes to avoid include assigning an overly generic tool, connecting personal credentials for the whole team, reusing approvals after a change and leaving loops unlimited. Even a successful demonstration can mislead: it shows one successful path, without demonstrating that excluded paths are actually blocked.
Open the acceptance checklist for an agent with tools
- The task has a final result and recognizable stopping conditions.
- Every function has verified parameters and an authorization scope.
- External content cannot change tools and permissions.
- The proposal shows recipients, data and consequences before confirmation.
- A data change invalidates approval where required by policy.
- Errors and retries do not produce duplicate actions.
- Limits on steps, usage and duration lead to a manageable state.
- There is an owner for the review queue and manual route.
Which automation should you test first?
Choose a task where the team can easily compare the proposal with its sources. An internal record for an operator lets you observe omissions, invented data, unnecessary consultations and review time. This evidence helps you decide whether to add tools or simplify the process. You do not need to start with the most consequential actions.
The final decision concerns the complete workflow, from request to exception handling. A model may be suitable for summarization but insufficient at another stage: assign work based on the evidence collected. We design the first agent around an assignment and a verifiable policy; if the route is already defined, we can start with business process automation and introduce Argon only at steps requiring interpretation.

Can Gemini 4 Argon be used to build AI agents?
Yes. The official model page documents function calling and other tools usable in an agentic workflow. The model is one component: the application, identity, permissions and action handling must be designed into the system using it.
Does function calling mean the model executes actions freely?
The model can propose a function with its arguments. In the application workflow, authorized code checks and executes the call: the function name and valid JSON do not constitute permission.
Which operations should require approval?
In the design proposed here, external messages, orders, payments, deletions and consequential changes require approval from the designated owner. Define the boundary in the process policy, with the specific result visible before confirmation.
Does Argon API include all the Gemini app's connected apps?
No. Connections available in the Gemini app do not demonstrate that the same connector is included in the API model alone. For every integration, check the interface, access, permissions and feature availability.
How do you stop an agent from continuing indefinitely?
The application enforces limits on steps, usage, time and repetition, with explicit stopping conditions. When data or permission is missing, the job must go to review rather than looking for unauthorized alternative routes.
How do you verify an AI agent before connecting it to business software?
Prepare a sample with ordinary cases, ambiguous inputs, service errors and attempts at excluded actions. The criteria include result quality, respect for permissions, absence of duplication and correct approval requests.
Must an agent always be able to write to business systems?
No. An initial scope can be limited to consulting authorized sources and preparing internal proposals. Add write permissions only for defined operations and after verifying controls and error handling.
