AI, AGI and ASI: differences between intelligence and autonomy
AI, AGI and ASI compared: general capabilities, performance and autonomy. What an agent demonstrates and which questions to ask a provider.

The difference TO AGI ASI It covers category, breadth and level of capacity. AI is the general term; AGI indicates general artificial intelligence according to criteria that vary; ASI indicates a general superiority over human capabilities. The three acronyms are not three subscriptions or three degrees of autonomy to activate.
To compare a proposal it is better to distinguish What the system can do, how well it does and what he is allowed to do alone. An agent who updates a management software and an assistant who proposes a draft may have different permissions without this demonstrating a different threshold of intelligence. The Levels of AGI framework separates performance and generality, discussing its relationship with autonomy. Morris and others, Levels of AGI.
This distinction allows you to discuss precise requirements with a supplier. For the overall picture of the term ASI, you can read what is artificial superintelligence; here the focus is the comparison of dimensions that are often confused.
In summary
- AI is a general category and does not alone identify a performance level.
- AGI requires an explicit definition: laboratory criteria do not completely coincide.
- ASI is about general superiority, distinct from excellence in a single task.
- An agent describes a way of directing the process; the permissions describe its scope of action.
- The business comparison must separate tasks addressed, results obtained and autonomy granted.
How to compare AI, AGI and ASI without confusing acronyms?
The following table translates the acronyms into questions. For AGI and ASI, the meaning depends on the declared criterion; it does not assign these levels to commercial products.
| Size | AI | AGI | ASI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category | Broad term for artificial intelligence systems | General artificial intelligence concept | Artificial superintelligence concept |
| Capacity Amplitude | It can be circumscribed or extended | It is central: it concerns many tasks and situations | He must uphold a general claim |
| Performance level | Not determined by signature alone | To be assessed against the definition adopted | General superiority over people |
| Operational autonomy | May be low or high | Some definitions explicitly include | It is not deduced from the number of authorized actions alone |
| Useful question | What problem does he face? | What general skills do you demonstrate and by what criterion? | What evidence supports general superiority? |
| Insufficient test | A nice interface | A Conversation on Many Subjects | A single outstanding achievement |
A proposal may use the correct term and remain inaccurate. “AI system for the purchasing office” identifies the context, but does not say whether the system searches for suppliers, compares documents or decides an order. Even the most sober label must be translated into an observable task.
The comparison improves when an abstract sentence becomes a working sentence. “He can reason” becomes, for example, “he can point out that two offerings use different units of measurement.” “It is autonomous” becomes “it can prepare the comparison without waiting for instructions at every step, but it cannot approve the order.” The two statements require different evidence.
Why does the definition of AGI change the comparison?
The OpenAI Charter defines AGI in terms of highly autonomous systems that outperform people in most economically relevant work. This formulation should be attributed to OpenAI: a comparison that adopts another definition could use a different threshold. OpenAI Charter.
The problem can also be seen without entering the scientific debate. If one person uses AGI to mean versatility and another to mean replacement of almost all professional work, they can discuss at length the same product giving opposite answers. Before evaluating the evidence, they must align the demand.
An SME does not have to choose the definition that will win a debate. It must recognize when the definition is necessary to the promise received. If a seller claims to have reached AGI, it is reasonable to ask for the criterion adopted and the link to the evidence presented.
On the other hand, if the proposal concerns an assistant for a demarcated activity, the evaluation may remain on that activity. The operating contract must clarify result, sources and responsibilities, even if the laboratory producing the model pursues more general objectives. A research goal and a supply requirement occupy different levels of the conversation.
Does generality mean knowing how to answer on so many topics?
An answer on different topics shows variety of use. To judge the ability in a process it is necessary to observe even if the system manages to do the required work, with the relevant constraints. Talking about a task and completing it are not the same test.
Let's imagine an assistant who explains well how a commercial race works, but does not distinguish a mandatory clause from an optional one in the document received. His discursive ability can be useful for training; reading that document requires another verification.
Generality, understood as breadth, does not eliminate differences between tasks. Translating an email, deriving a deadline, and assessing a contractual ambiguity involve different controls. A successful outcome in one of the activities does not entitle one to consider the others resolved.
In business work it is therefore advisable to list families of requests, avoiding that a very homogeneous sample looks wider than it is. A collection of almost identical questions on the same catalogue can verify local robustness, but should not be presented as general evidence.
Retrieving business information adds another distinction. An assistant can consult many sources because it is linked to an archive; the size of the archive does not equate to the breadth of capabilities. The report is developed in memory, context and superintelligence.
Are high performance and reliable performance equivalent?
“The system solved the problem” describes a success. "The system solves the problem under the agreed conditions" is a broader operational promise. To distinguish them, repetitions, relevant cases and stable acceptance criteria are needed.
In the Agent Assessment Guide, Anthropic distinguishes the success achieved at least once from that achieved with constancy in multiple tests. Metrics respond to different needs; a rare performance can have value in research and be unsuitable for a process that requires continuity. Anthropic, Demystifying evals for AI agents.
For an SME, control must include work following the first output. If a comparison between estimates is correct only after an extended review, the review is part of the process. It is not a detail to be excluded because the model had already produced a table.
The threshold must also be suitable for the task. A creative draft can tolerate variations; a reconstruction of quantity must preserve values and unity. To say that both answers are “high quality” hides a material difference in acceptance.
Local reliability does not, however, constitute an ASI test. It allows to accept a function within the limits observed. To judge the broader thesis, the article Does superintelligence already exist in 2026? distinguishes test results and general classification.
What distinguishes autonomy, agent and model?
A model is a component of the system. The application provides it with instructions, data and tools; the process establishes how to use them. "Agent" describes a configuration in which the model dynamically directs steps and use of tools, according to the distinction proposed by Anthropic. Anthropic, Building effective agents.
The autonomy granted is a separate choice. The system can decide how to search for information and stop before any changes. You may also receive permission to change a data subject within explicit conditions. These configurations describe different spaces of action.
Consider two applications based on the same model. The first reads a ticket and suggests a department. The second reads the ticket, chooses the department and assigns it through the business management software. The second performs an additional action; this does not automatically prove that it interprets the request better.
Similarly, a default path may be suitable for a critical function because it reduces possible choices. The number of decisions left to the model is not an indicator of quality to maximize. The question is what freedom improves the outcome in the case under consideration.
The Guide assistant, chatbot and agent: differences clarifies the application forms. The relationship with the ASI threshold is deepened in AI Agents and Superintelligence in SMEs.
The same capacity can have three operational configurations
An assistant can recognise an incomplete request and suggest the question to ask the customer. In a second configuration, it can prepare the draft in the business management software. In a third, it can send it if the company authorises that action and has verified its conditions.
The recognition of missing information remains the ability to be evaluated. Preparation and sending add integration and permissions. Comparing the three configurations only with the “smarter” label would make these differences invisible.
How to read “Autonomous AI” in a restoration workshop?
Let's take one hypothetical scenario: a restoration workshop wants to prepare the worksheets from photographs, notes and conversations with the client. The system should reorder what is documented, highlight missing information, and propose a draft.
The ability to verify is the distinction between observation and inference. If a note says the material needs to be checked, the system should not turn it into a certainty. A formally flawless card can be wrong precisely because it eliminates the uncertainty useful to the restorer.
On the other hand, the generality of the proposal depends on which working families it faces. A test on wooden furnishings does not authorize a similar promise on paintings or textiles. The firm can accept limited support in the first area without having to judge the system in any discipline.
Autonomy finally concerns the fate of the card. Saving an internal draft, modifying an approved tab, and communicating an evaluation to the client are different actions. The shop can grant the first and store the others to the professional.
A precise description of the proposal could be: "Support the compilation of drafts for this family of works, with reporting of sources and revision of the restorer". It's a controllable promise. Defining it AGI or ASI would add a thesis on capabilities that those local evidence does not support.
What changes in a vocational training centre?
One second hypothetical scenario is about a center that organizes technical courses and wants to help the secretariat to answer on registrations. Sources include calendars, prerequisites, and programs; requests come with informal terms and incomplete information.
A useful capability is to link the request to the correct course and report the missing prerequisite. The test must distinguish a simple question about the dates from a request involving the interpretation of an already owned title. It is not enough for both to produce sliding responses.
The breadth of capabilities can be assessed through different requests: change of calendar, application on the program, incomplete documentation, choice between similar paths. It remains an evaluation of the service in the context of the center, without transforming the internal variety into universal generality.
The autonomy granted could be limited to preparing responses to be approved. If you also want to book a seat, there are restrictions on the availability and conditions of registration. Accepting a person without a requirement does not become correct because the system has completed the form.
The center can then compare two proposals with a very concrete question: does one interpret the requests better, or is it only connected to more functions? The first difference concerns results; the second concerns tools and permits. Both may have value, but should be made visible and evaluated separately.
What phrases in a proposal hide important differences?
“Knows all about your company“ can mean that it consults the uploaded documents. You have to ask what documents, with what updates and what happens when a source is missing. The guide to Company RAG explains the recovery mechanism, which does not constitute an AGI statement.
“Work without human intervention"can only refer to the ideal path of the demo. To understand its meaning, you need to ask where it stops and how it signals a block. An escalation function can be an essential part of good service.
“It is superior to people“It requires a circumscribed comparison: which people, what activities, what conditions? A comparison with a beginner and one with an experienced professional support different claims. The word “superior” alone does not describe a measure.
“Learn after each use"can refer to retained notes, retrieved preferences, or changes to the model. They are different phenomena. The proposal should specify what changes, where and how it is verified, avoiding using "learning" for any form of persistence.
These translations do not serve to challenge every commercial phrase. They serve to make comparable offers that could describe useful functions with an inaccurate lexicon.
What errors distort the comparison between capability and autonomy?
The first mistake is putting the acronyms in a single scale, as if AI were always less capable, AGI more autonomous and ASI completely independent. The comparison loses the size that should clarify and pushes to ask for the highest label.
The second is rewarding the most visible action. A system that updates a record immediately may seem more advanced than one that signals a contradiction. If the data is doubtful, the second answer may be the correct one. The level of control is deepened in superintelligence and alignment.
The third is comparing a model with a full application. Documents, integrations and process rules can explain a difference in the results. To attribute it to the model, the conditions of the comparison need to be clarified.
The fourth is extending the perimeter without changing the evidence. If the system has passed document reading cases, the addition of actions on the management software requires controls on the outcome of actions. It's not just about giving him an extra credential.
How to make a clear request to the AI provider?
An effective request can be written as a short chapter: admitted activities, expected quality, cases requiring intervention and authorized actions. Each part responds to one of the dimensions of the comparison.
Instead of “we want a very smart agent,” a firm may ask: “We want you to prepare the comparison between these offers, keep the original values, signal the conditions that are not comparable and save an internal draft.” The request includes performance and operational perimeter.
The supplier can then indicate what depends on the model, what on the documents and what on the integration. It can also motivate a simpler path if it produces the result with greater clarity. Economic comparison becomes more readable because it concerns the same work, not abstract labels.
When the goal is to decide whether to test the project or prepare data and process first, the next step is superintelligence for SMEs: waiting for it or using AI today?. To compare components available on the same task, you can use how to choose an AI model.
The distinction between AI, AGI and ASI is useful when making a more precise promise. To translate a proposal into required capabilities, permitted autonomy and concrete evidence, a AI Consulting can help you build a comparison about the work that the company really needs to complete.

What is the difference between AI, AGI and ASI?
AI indicates the general category of artificial intelligence. AGI concerns general capabilities according to the definition adopted; ASI indicates a general superhuman level. The acronyms do not automatically correspond to three types of product available.
Does AGI simply mean a chatbot that talks about everything?
A variety of topics is not enough to demonstrate general performance. The quality of results must be checked on tasks relevant to the definition being used, including new tasks.
Do all labs define AGI in the same way?
No. OpenAI links its definition to economically relevant work and highly autonomous systems. The Levels of AGI framework distinguishes breadth of capabilities from performance, while also treating autonomy as a dimension of how the system is used.
Is an autonomous agent smarter than an assistant?
Autonomy describes who chooses and performs the steps of the process. Two systems can use the same model and have different permissions. To compare their capabilities, tests on the results are needed, in addition to the description of the permissions.
Can a model be superhuman without being ASI?
It can outperform people in a narrowly defined task without demonstrating general superiority. In the framework being used, depth of performance and breadth of capabilities must be assessed separately.
How to use this distinction in an SME?
Describe the tasks the system needs to handle, how results are assessed and which actions are permitted. Then ask the supplier for evidence covering each dimension, rather than substituting an acronym for that evidence.
