Kimi AI with n8n: how to design a workflow
Kimi AI with n8n via HTTP Request: illustrative configuration, structured output, errors and approvals for a verifiable business process.
Reading time: 10 min

Kimi AI with n8n can be integrated by designing an HTTP call to the official API, followed by validation and handling of the result. n8n documents an HTTP Request node for REST services; Kimi exposes compatible protocols for calling the models. This is the technical basis of the connection, distinct from automating the browser chat. HTTP Request n8n and Kimi API Overview.
The useful workflow does not end with the model response. It must link the input to a practice, understand if the output is usable, show exceptions and authorize writing in the business system. Otherwise you have a sequence of nodes that generates text, but not a reliable process.
The guide, updated to 9 October 2026, proposes a circumscribed case: classify a request and prepare a working draft. For the picture of the product you find What is Kimi AI; for endpoints and costs see the page on Kimi API.
In summary
- The HTTP path uses the official API and server-side credentials, without automating chat.
- The proposal described here separates classification, verification and updating of management software.
- A valid JSON does not prove that the chosen category matches the request.
- A timeout or error must leave a visible practice to resume.
- Human approval must refer to the current proposal and not automatically authorize subsequent ones.
Which workflow should you build first?
Choose a simple entry, such as an information request form. The process receives internal description and references; the model proposes the category and missing information; an operator decides how to proceed. The end result is a readable draft associated with the practice, not an automatically submitted offer.
The distinction serves to isolate the work of AI. A form can already check that a mandatory field is present. A deterministic rule can recognize an existing product code. Use the model where it is necessary to interpret variable text, without entrusting it with verifications that the management software can do with certainty.
Describe the boundary before opening the n8n editor: what requests enter, what categories exist, and who can confirm the outcome. If the process changes to each operator, a more elaborate prompt does not eliminate inconsistency. The Guide to the automation with n8n helps to distinguish repeatable flow from exceptions that remain human.
For the pilot he uses synthetic data and a test destination. The API account is consumption-based and distinct from the chat membership: it avoids interpreting an existing subscription as an authorization to run unlimited calls. API Billing.
How to configure HTTP Request for Kimi?
The configuration below is illustrative, derived from documentation and not performed with a key or Kimi credit. It is not a proven connector. Before activating the flow you must try request, response and error handling in your environment, with an authorized budget.
The n8n node allows you to choose method, URL, authentication and JSON body. The table translates these options into the international Chat Completions path documented by Kimi. HTTP Request Parameters and Kimi endpoint.
| Node field | Proposed setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Method | POST |
Send a generation request |
| URL | https://api.moonshot.ai/v1/chat/completions |
Endpoint Chat Completions International |
| Authentication | Generic Credential Header Auth | Separate the token from the content of the workflow |
| Header in the credential | Authorization with value Bearer <chiave> |
Authentication documented by the provider |
| Body Content Type | JSON | Store types and structure of the request |
| Response Format | JSON | Read the structured API response |
The Header Auth credential contains the name and value of the header; n8n also documents Bearer Auth. Select the type present in your installation and verify that the header sent is the one requested. The placeholder <chiave> should not be copied into the prompt: the real key remains in the credential. HTTP Request credentials.
The Code service has a different endpoint: don't use it in this table. And don't link the workflow to the chat via automated login: global terms require written permission for automation or scraping of the interface. Kimi App Terms.
What request JSON send to the model?
For the current K3 model the API ID is kimi-k3; the thinking remains active and the field reasoning_effort supports low, high and max. The example uses low for simple classification, not as a guarantee of accuracy or consumption. The guide also documents response_format with JSON strict scheme. K3 API Guide.

Replace the synthetic text with a field already cleaned from the input. Don't build JSON by loosely concatenating the description: quotation marks and back-to-backs must be serialized correctly. Node expressions should be adapted to the actual structure of your items, which can change according to the trigger and previous steps.
The categories are one example design choice, not official Kimi categories. Do not add a field approvato that the model can decide: approval belongs to the operator and the system. You can ask for a reason and missing information; the decision on the practice is made after validation.
How to read and validate the answer before using it?
With Chat Completions the final text arrives in the contents of the assistant message; the K3 guide indicates to parsing message.content, not of reasoning_content. In n8n the precise path depends on the options of the node: if you include status and header, it changes the envelope with respect to the body alone. Check the item actually returned before configuring the next node. Output K3 and HTTP Request response.
Validation must distinguish format and meaning. The format check confirms that the fields exist, that the category belongs to the list, and that the missing information is a list. The meaning check compares proposal and original text: a service request must not become a commercial request just because it mentions a product.
Keep the case identifier outside generation. The system assigns it when it receives the request and retains it throughout the workflow. The model must not invent the customer’s identity, the case code or the contact to involve.
If the parsing fails or the answer is missing, send the practice to an exception branch. Don't turn an absent category into the default one just to keep the workflow going. A convenient value can make running green and hide an operating problem.
Where to put human approval?
Insert it between verified proposal and writing in the operating system. The operator must see original description, proposed category, motivation and missing fields. He must be able to correct the outcome or reject it without making the entire request again.
Confirmation must be linked to a version of the proposal. If the description changes or the model regenerates the result, an old approval must not authorise the new write operation. Retain who confirmed, which case it concerned and which content was visible at that moment, avoiding recording unnecessary material.
Does the request change after the operator has approved it?
Return the case to the state requiring verification. Compare the current version with the approved one before making an update. An old button, a tab left open or a delayed response must not confirm content different from what the operator read. This check belongs to the workflow and business management software, not the prompt.
A simple classification does not necessarily require an agent capable of choosing tools. A deterministic flow with a single AI step can suffice. To distinguish this architecture from a system that decides the next steps, read Kimi Agents for Companies.
Two Italian cases: requests for windows and maintenance
Hypothetical scenario: window retailer in Aosta. The form receives requests for catalogue, quotation and assistance. The workflow cleans up the description and asks Kimi for category and missing information. A message about a locked window must arrive at the service contact, but the model must not promise an appointment or warranty cover.
The first pilot only creates drafts in a separate queue. The referent compares proposed category and original request; corrections help to understand if the vocabulary of the categories is too generic. If the location is missing, the stream proposes to request it without inferring it from outside information. Sending a response requires a separate confirmation.
Hypothetical scenario: mechanical workshop in Modena. Requests for work contain free-text descriptions of noises or anomalies. Kimi can propose an operational summary and identify missing details. It must not make a definitive diagnosis, order spare parts or determine that the vehicle can be driven.
The manager keeps the appointment ID and shows the draft to the technician. The technician corrects the description and authorizes the rescue. If the same request comes from a second channel, the duplicates check is done with the shop rules, not asking the model to guess if the people are the same.
In both cases the process can also be useful when the model abstains. A visible "other" outcome is preferable to an arbitrary category that directs the practice to the wrong department.
How to manage duplicate retry, limits and practices?
An API error must have a destination. n8n documents error workflows to handle failed executions; the recovery stream should record the practice reference and report what is missing to take it back. It is not enough to leave the error in the editor history. Error Management n8n.
The Kimi platform documents separate limits for competition, requests and tokens. A HTTP 429 requires controlled backoffs and retry. Restricts the pilot's parallel executions based on the actual tier; re-launching all requests together can produce other errors. Rate limit Kimi.
If a model call is repeated, it may generate a different proposal. That is why you should keep the received, proposed and confirmed states separate. Before writing, check whether the case has already been processed; a timeout after an update must not cause a second update when the workflow restarts.
The cost includes attempts and outputs, as well as input. Use authorized test consumption to calculate the cost of completed practices, not just successful calls. Cache prices and tools have distinct entries in the API Price list; the method is described in How to Calculate AI API Costs.
How to know where a practice stops?
Prepare an operational view with process states. The operator must distinguish a request pending the call, a proposal to be read and a practice that requires technical intervention. If everything appears to be "in processing", it does not know whether to wait, correct the data or resume the work manually.
It associates to the execution the internal reference of the practice and the reason for the block. A credential error is about who maintains the system; an insufficient description is about who manages the customer. Sending both to the same generic queue slows the recovery and causes the flow to re-launch without solving the cause.
To check the quality, it retains in the pilot the outcome confirmed by the operator and the reason for the corrections. Look for recurrences: a too wide category, a never-expected type of request, a field that the form does not collect. In these cases the improvement may be in the module or in the rules of the department, before in the prompt.
It also measures the practices that the model leaves in “other”. They are not automatically failures: they can represent ambiguous requests handled correctly. The question is whether abstention protects the process or whether it is becoming the usual way of avoiding a poorly defined classification.
Finally, check the manual path. If the API is not available, the operator must be able to read the original request and process it without waiting for the model. Automation remains useful when it speeds up ordinary work and makes exceptions visible, while keeping service continuity possible.
What errors to avoid before activating the stream?
Do not put an API key in an exported node to share with the customer. Do not send the entire message with attachments and personal data when only a description is needed. Do not consider the execution history a dataless archive: n8n is also part of the path to be evaluated. For provider and retention consult Kimi AI Privacy.
Also avoid skipping the check in the business management software. A correct HTTP connection can write to the wrong record if the identifier mapping is wrong. Before activating the real destination, check fields, permissions and behaviour with duplicates: these are topics in the guide to integrate business management software with n8n.
Test clear, ambiguous and empty requests, as well as requests containing hostile instructions. Simulate provider unavailability, unreadable output and delayed confirmations. The result to approve is the complete process: input, proposal, exception and authorised write operation.
If you want to take a request from the form to a verifiable queue, without losing control over confirmations, Giallo builds automations of business processes. Start with a concrete practice and what the operator must see before confirming it.

How can you connect Kimi AI to n8n?
The described path uses an HTTP Request node to the official API. Compatibility is inferred from the documentation of the two products: the illustrated workflow was not executed with a Kimi key.
Has an official Kimi connector for n8n been verified?
None has been verified for this guide. HTTP Request lets you design the connection without attributing compatibility we have not tested to a specific node.
Can I automate the Kimi chat with n8n?
For an integration use the official API and its conditions. The terms of the global app limit automation and scraping of the interface without written permission.
Where should the API key be placed in the workflow?
In n8n's credentials, with access restricted to those maintaining the workflow. Not in the prompt text, a public form field or a JSON file to be shared.
Can JSON output immediately update the business management system?
First, it must be validated against the fields, permitted values and originating case. For operations with business effects, include explicit approval and verify that it applies to the current proposal.
How do I avoid duplication when the workflow restarts?
Use a stable case identifier and check the status before writing. Separating generation from confirmation helps you repeat a model call without repeating an update already made.
